Science and faith in God are not in conflict. True science is the pursuit of truth, and God is the Author of all truth. The difference is that science begins with what mankind knows today and builds on it tomorrow, while God has always known the truth. Science learns because human knowledge is limited. God never has to learn because His knowledge is complete.
Throughout history, people have confidently declared certain ideas to be absolute facts, only to discover years later that they were wrong. For centuries, doctors believed that bleeding sick patients would restore the body’s balance and cure disease. Millions of people were treated this way because it was considered the best medical science of the day. Today, except for a few specific medical conditions, bloodletting is recognized as having often harmed patients rather than helped them. Doctors once believed diseases were caused by “bad air.” Later they discovered bacteria and viruses. Every generation has believed it had finally reached the truth, only to discover there was still more to learn.
This is not a criticism of science. In fact, it is one of science’s greatest strengths. Science is willing to test ideas, gather evidence, and change its conclusions when better evidence is discovered. But history also teaches us humility. What one generation calls settled science is sometimes corrected by the next. Human understanding is always growing because human understanding is never complete.
That is why I become concerned when people dismiss the Bible by saying, “Science has proven it wrong,” or, “We do not need an ancient book to tell us what is true.” Those statements assume that our present knowledge is complete. History says otherwise. Every generation has believed it possessed the answers, only to discover later that it did not. If science is continually learning, why would we reject the one source that has never claimed to be learning, but has always claimed to come from the One who knows all things?
The Bible has never changed its message. It has never changed that God is the Creator of all things. It has never changed that mankind was created in His image. It has never changed that sin separates us from God. It has never changed that death is not the end of our existence, but the doorway into eternity. It has never changed that every person will one day stand before God. It has never changed that salvation is by God’s grace through faith. It has never changed that Jesus Christ is the only way to the Father. Civilizations have changed. Governments have changed. Philosophies have changed. Scientific theories have changed. But the Word of God has remained the same.
That is why we should be very careful when we make laws or redefine truth based solely on today’s scientific understanding when it conflicts with God’s Word. Human knowledge is always increasing, and history reminds us that what one generation considers settled science may one day be revised. God’s Word, however, has never needed revision.
So when someone ends the discussion by saying, “Science proves it,” I simply remember that science describes what we understand today, not necessarily everything that is true. If a conclusion truly conflicts with the Word of God, I will trust the One whose truth has never changed. Science, as we know it today, may simply not have caught up with all that God already knows.
So I have a simple question. If history has shown that mankind’s understanding is continually changing, why would we not begin with the one source that has never changed? Why would we not start our search for truth with the Word of God and allow our discoveries to lead us closer to what He has already declared?
If God is the Author of creation, then true scientific discovery will never ultimately contradict Him. It will simply continue uncovering what God has known from the very beginning.
